Marinated tempeh burger

*This recipe uses liquid smoke, a flavoring obtained from the smoke of different wood species. It can be found in most grocery stores, in the BBQ sauces section.

  • Servings : 4


  • 1 packet of tempeh, about 240g, cut into 4 squares
  • 1/4 cup soy or tamari sauce
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 1 tsp of liquid smoke *
  • 1 tbsp of Worcestershire (English sauce)
  • 1 clove of garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp of chipotle powder
  • Burger buns (excellent on whole wheat English muffin)
  • Condiments of your choice: mayonnaise, mustard, tomatoes, onion, lettuce …


  1. Cut the tempeh package into 4 squares.
  2. Combine all the ingredients for the marinade and pour over the tempeh.
  3. Leave to marinate in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours.
  4. Grill on the BBQ over medium heat for 5-10 minutes on each side.
  5. Serve on toast with your condiments of your choice!
